Haunted Asylum of Lost Souls
Dark History of Genesee County Poor Farm
Discover the dark history and active paranormal activity at Rolling Hills Asylum, one of the most haunted locations in New York. Established in 1826 as the Genesee County Poor Farm, this historic property evolved from a refuge for the destitute into a hotspot for ghostly encounters.
The Genesee County Poor Farm officially opened its doors in 1827. It served as a self-sustaining institution to house society’s most vulnerable populations, including orphans and widowed families, the mentally ill and disabled, minor criminals and the destitute, habitual drunkards, the elderly, and the infirm. Residents performed daily chores, tending to the livestock and working the agricultural land. Overseers of the Poor from several Genesee County towns relocated individuals here, along with their minimal belongings.
Tragedy is woven into the very fabric of the property. Rolling Hills Asylum witnessed over 1,700 documented deaths, with hundreds more going unrecorded. The county buried unclaimed individuals on-site in a hidden cemetery located on the asylum grounds. This immense concentration of despair has left behind a powerful residual energy.
Today, the spirits of former residents constantly seek attention, crying out from behind closed doors. Visitors regularly document intense paranormal experiences throughout the property.
One of the most famous spirits you may encounter is Roy. He was a gentle soul who suffered from extreme gigantism, standing well over 7 feet tall. Visit his room to view his massive bookshelf, which stretches across the entire wall. Roy loved to read. Bring a book and read him a story to get his attention. Guests frequently witness his enormous shadow lurking through the building corridors.
Hear the disembodied sounds of ghostly children running through the dark, frigid underground tunnels. Brave visitors can lie on the original embalming table to see if the spirits take their breath away. Watch doors open by themselves, inviting you into the darkness, or call out for the spirit of Nurse Emmie.
This is just a small portion of the paranormal experiences you will have with us. Are you ready to be committed to the Asylum…..
