Ghosts in the Stacks
Haunted History of Carnegie's Last PA Gem
Founded by a group of 123 dedicated women in the Literary Club in 1894, the Butler Area Public Library holds a rich place in Pennsylvania history. With the help of an Andrew Carnegie library grant, the library officially opened its current doors in 1921. Today, it stands proud as one of the original—but final—Carnegie libraries built in Pennsylvania.
Expanding over 130 years, the historic building has plenty of chilling stories to tell. Modern renovations cannot erase the spirits lingering in the quiet book aisles. Visitors often report a sudden chill, the faint smell of old parchment, and the distinct feeling of being watched while browsing the shelves.
You might even catch a glimpse of their most famous resident spirit: Phyllis Parker. As the story goes, the innkeeper’s daughter suffered a severe nervous breakdown following the execution of her British spy boyfriend. Her curious soul is still said to wander the stacks today.
