Winery & Haunted Hankey Mansion

Black Dog Wine Company, proudly located inside the historic Hankey Mansion. The historic Hankey Farm dates back to the 1800s. The iconic mansion was originally owned by John F. Hankey. Born in 1883 to German immigrants Frederick William and Josephine Marks Hankey, John built a legacy in the region.

After mastering the bakery business, high demand led him to establish the Hankey Baking Company Farms directly on the property. The farm actively raised chickens to supply fresh eggs for his popular bakery. John also modeled a large basement room after a traditional German rathskeller—a historic basement pub and restaurant.

In 1954, James A. Stewart purchased the mansion. He introduced a local printing press business while continuing to use the land for active farming, raising English show horses, and breeding Jersey cows.

While the mansion is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of delicious Pennsylvania wine, it is also home to a few ghostly guests. When the lights go out and the doors lock, the mischievous spirits of the Hankey property come out to play.

Experiencing the Mansion’s Paranormal Activity:

Wine bottles frequently slide out of wine racks or end up on the floor.

Echoes of historic farm animals still linger throughout the outdoor grounds.

Guests and staff report the distinct feeling of being watched when walking through the rooms.

Phantom voices, unexplainable knocking, and footsteps echo in our basement rathskeller.

Sit quietly in the house and you may hear the phantom crinkling of paper and historic pressing machines hard at work.

Hold your glass tightly during your next visit—you never know when a paranormal experience will happen at this historic mansion!
