PA's Historical Ghost Village:
Old Economy Village
Established in 1824, Old Economy Village is a beautifully preserved historic settlement situated on the scenic banks of the Ohio River in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. Administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, this site tells the unique story of the Harmony Society.
The Harmony Society was founded by German Separatist George Rapp. Seeking religious and economic freedom, Rapp emigrated from Germany to America with a dedicated group of 800 farmers and craftsmen. They purchased 3,000 acres of fertile land along the Ohio River—a strategic location ideal for agricultural farming and shipping the Society’s goods to bustling markets along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
After two decades in the United States, George Rapp and his adopted son, Frederick, established a simple, pietistic lifestyle modeled after the early Christian Church. Following his stepfather’s passing, Frederick became widely recognized as the primary driving force behind the Harmony Society’s highly successful business ventures and economic growth.
Despite early economic prosperity, shifts in time and societal events eventually triggered the community’s decline. Following Frederick’s death, leadership transitioned to trustees Romelius Baker, Jonathan Lenz, and Jacob Henrici. Lenz famously documented that if the Messiah did not return before the passing of their final member, the community’s remaining assets would transfer to the state.
Consequently, in 1916, the remaining six acres of land and historical structures became the property of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. By 1919, the grounds officially opened as Old Economy Village, a designated state historic site preserved for future generations.
Beyond its standard textbook history, Old Economy Village harbors a darker, mysterious past. Concealed staircases on the grounds lead deep into hidden underground vaults where few dare to venture. Visitors and staff frequently report hearing the disquieting sounds of phantom footsteps echoing through empty buildings. Others claim to have witnessed the ghostly apparition of a Harmonist man quietly strolling through the historic gardens at twilight.
